Jack Shohet, M.D.
A distinguished neurotologist and otologist, Dr. Jack Shohet specializes in ear and skull base surgery. Dr. Shohet implanted the first middle-ear hearing device in Orange County.
Board certified in both otolaryngology and neurotology, Dr. Shohet collaborated for several years with the internationally renowned neurotologists, Dr. William F. House and Dr. Michael E. Glascock, III. Dr. Shohet continues to offer new treatments for hearing disorders and related problems. He is actively involved in clinical trials and the practice serves as one of only six sites worldwide engaged in the clinical trial of a totally implantable hearing aid.
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Shohet is engaged in medical research and teaches at the University of California, Irvine, where he is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery. He also serves as medical editor of Emedicine Online Textbook and has authored numerous papers related to his field. Dr. Shohet is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, Orange County Medical Association, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Neurotology Society, and the Orange County Society of Head and Neck Surgeons. Dr. Shohet lectures frequently to professional and community groups throughout Southern California, and has been named to Best Doctors in America. He currently serves as Chairman of the Otolarynogology Department at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.
Dr. Jack Shohet received his bachelor’s and medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his internship and residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was subsequently awarded a fellowship in otology/neurotology at the Ear Foundation in Nashville.
Joni Kristin Doherty, MD, PhD
Dr. Joni Kristin Doherty is Board Certified in both Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Neurotology, with exceptional clinical skills in both general otology and skull base surgery. She is experienced in the evaluation and treatment of outer, middle, and inner-ear problems, including exostoses (surfer’s ear), ear infections, cholesteatoma, hearing disorders, Meniere’s disease, otosclerosis, and acoustic neuromas. Prior to joining Shohet Ear Associates, Dr. Doherty served as an Otolaryngology faculty member and Neurotology Fellowship Director at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) since completing her neurotolgy fellowship training at the House Clinic in 2006.
Dr. Doherty maintains a faculty position at UCSD and remains involved in her acoustic neuroma (a.k.a. vestibular schwannoma) research there, for which she received NIH funding in 2007. She is also an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and serves on both the Implantable Hearing Devices Subcommittee and the Certification Program for Otolaryngology Personnel (CPOP) Committee. She is active in the Association for Research in Otolaryngology as well, and is a member of the American Neurotology Society, the North American Skull Base Society, and the California Medical Association. Dr. Doherty also serves on the Editorial Board of Otology & Neurotology journal.
Dr. Doherty received her medical degree (M.D.) as well as a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Molecular Cell Biology from Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, OR in 1999, and in 2009, she received the OHSU New Technology Innovations Award for her work on HER2 (ErbB2) Binding Antagonists, which she began as a graduate student there. She completed her internship and Otolaryngology Residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and her Neurotology Fellowship at the House Clinic in Los Angeles.
Cheryl Tanita, M.S., Au.D.
Cheryl Tanita is fully certified and licensed by the state of California, and a member of American Academy of Audiology and American Speech and Hearing Association. In addition, she has completed advanced training in specialized diagnostic techniques such as Electrocochleography (EcoG), Steady State ABR (ASSR), Vestibular Autorotation Testing (VAT), Videoelectronystagmography (VNG) as well as cochlear implant and implantable hearing device evaluation and rehabilitation. She is also actively involved in research in her field and enjoys lecturing to the community and peers about the latest hearing advancements.
Cheryl has a diverse background and experience in many different aspects of Audiology. Most recently, she earned her Doctor of Audiology degree from the University of Florida. She also received a bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Arizona State University and master’s degree in Audiology from Syracuse University. Prior to graduation, she completed her externship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, where she put her education to work by evaluating hearing disorders, and providing rehabilitative services such as hearing aid dispensing, cochlear implant and aural rehabilitation. After graduation, she moved to Chicago and joined Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a full diagnostic and trauma center in the heart of Chicago. Certified in Audiology, Cheryl set up Illinois’ first early intervention and detection program for hearing loss in infants.
After seven years with Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Cheryl shifted her focus. She joined Siemens Corporation, where she was actively involved in research and development that included both international and domestic relations. She was also a National Account Representative for the continental United States, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Guam.
Megan Greenya, Au.D.
Megan Greenya is a certified and licensed audiologist in the state of California; she is also an active member of the American Academy of Audiology. Megan received her bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech Sciences from Purdue University in Indiana and also completed her Doctorate of Audiology Degree at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Megan previously served as an audiologist at Providence Speech and Hearing Center in Orange, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she specialized in both pediatric and adult diagnostic testing, hearing aid dispensing, and vestibular assessment.
In addition, Megan participated in a research study entitled "Environmental Sound Identification with Cochlear Implantation." She has a particular interest in Vestibular Assessment and has presented on "Dizziness and Falls" at the Illinois Academy of Audiology conferences. She plans to continue her focus on research as part of the Shohet Ear Associates team.
Arineh Khachatoorians, Au.D.
Arineh Khachatoorians is a certified and licensed audiologist in the state of California; she is also an active member of the American Academy of Audiology. Arineh received her Doctorate of Audiology degree from San Diego State University/University of California San Diego, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Disorders with emphasis in Audiology from California State University, Northridge. She completed her Audiology Externship with Shohet Ear Associates prior to joining the practice as a staff audiologist. Arineh also completed a variety of audiology internships at area clinics, including Rady Children’s Hospital, VA San Diego Medical Center, and at the University of California, San Diego. Arineh’s volunteer activities have focused on audiology and better hearing. In partnership with House Ear Institute, she has presented to teens in the Southern California region about noise-induced hearing loss and hearing conservation. In addition, she completed a doctoral research project entitled, "Morphology of Carhart’s Notch in Otosclerosis."
